The Investment Wardrobe
September 01, 2009 | 23rd Edition

Investment pieces don’t crash with trends, and they can even increase the value of other items in your closet. So rather than filling your closet with clutter that you may only wear once, invest in a few higher quality key pieces that you can build on for seasons to come!

wrapdress Wrap Dress: The forgiving nature of a wrap dress flatters every body type, making it a wardrobe must! It’s one piece, so it’s an easy go-to, and this silhouette will stand the test of time. CAbi’s Shadow Wrap is perfect for fall, as the faux wrap will prevent those embarrassing flip ups the winter wind can bring.
thecoat The Coat: The perfect little black coat should have a home in every woman’s closet. It can take you from casual cool to chic professional, and anywhere in between. Whether it’s with your favorite vintage tee and jeans, this season’s statement blouse, or a pencil skirt and turtleneck, you can always add that ideal black coat for an extra little spark!
pearls Statement Accessory: A statement accessory can work wonders in your closet, instantly transforming even your most basic outfit. Whether it’s a bold belt, perfect pair of shoes, or standout strands of pearls, invest in at least one wow piece that makes you feel like a star.
chicdress Little Black Dress: It may be “just a dress,” but when you find the dress that hugs your curves like it was crafted especially for you, your confidence rises, your face brightens, and it becomes “the” dress. The LBD is a classic that will always be in style, so it’s worth investing in one you feel fabulous in! For increased versatility, look for a simple yet stunning silhouette, like CAbi’s Perfectly Chic Dress.
blouse Statement Blouse: Whether worn alone, or under a sweater or jacket, a statement blouse, well, makes a statement! The unique details speak of your confidence, and the classic silhouette that will stay in fashion beyond this season speaks of your style smarts. CAbi’s Arabella Blouse is an exciting twist on the classic white shirt. It’s beautiful enough to stand alone, but seriously punches up any outfit!

How to Wear: What’s Already in Your Closet
September 01, 2009 | 23rd Edition

Why is it that we can look at an overflowing closet and think, “I have nothing to wear,” as we sulk away feeling defunct and defeated. We’ve all been there. We’ve become so conditioned to our classics that we forget why we fell in love with them in the first place. Ladies, it’s time to rekindle that flame! So get inside your closet, and think outside the box.

Jeans: If you love the fit of your favorite jeans, but the style fit in better ten years ago, take them to the tailor for a little remodeling. Have them tapered in and hemmed to ankle length. You can even modify the color yourself by distressing them with sandpaper. But of course, the easiest alteration is just rolling ‘em up and throwing on some heels for a totally updated look. jeans
cardigan Cardigan: The cardigan is fashion’s chameleon. Wear it buttoned up alone as a top, layered over other shirts, or as a stylish substitute for your suit jacket. Patterned or plain, you can’t go wrong with a classic cardigan. Cinch in a belt at your natural waist or throw on clusters of broaches or necklaces for an extra pop of pizzazz.
whiteshirt White Shirt: A classic white collared shirt is the ultimate wardrobe staple. For instant sophistication, tuck it into your favorite jean or black skirt, and top it off with a vest and/or a shrunken blazer. Then toss on a hot pair of heels or your favorite sassy flats, and you’re ready to go! For a slightly more out of the box approach, wear it under your LBD (we recommend CAbi’s Perfectly Chic), and pile on the necklaces.
Turtleneck: A solid turtleneck is like your closet’s blank canvas to create countless wardrobe works of art. Whether you’re going for dressed up elegance, or downtown cool, a black turtleneck builds a solid foundation for style. turtleneck

A few key accessories can bring your look to life and exponentially expand your wardrobe! Accessories are a simple style solution to update your classics and stretch your investment purchases throughout the seasons. But there is no need to break the bank. The less you spend on accessories, the more you have to invest in your wardrobe! So, our advice - focus on a few inexpensive pieces that will complement your investments, and also reinvent clothes you already have hanging in your closet.

Tips for Saving
September 01, 2009 | 23rd Edition

Save on your Grocery Bill

  • Stick to grocery items at the grocery store. Health and beauty goods are usually cheaper at stores like Target or CVS. And you’ll find the best deals on paper products at stores like Sam’s Club or Costco.
  • Opt for frozen seafood over fresh. We were skeptical, too - but keep in mind that most “fresh” fish has been frozen during transport. Vacuum packed fish fillets, as well as bags of frozen shrimp, cost 20 to 40 percent less than their counterparts at the fish counter.
  • Try generic or store brands of items you buy regularly. You’ll save some change now, but you’ll likely discover that the store brand is just as good as the name brand, and basically identical minus the marketing. Once you’re on board the generic train, you’ll find your regular grocery bill getting smaller and smaller.
  • Check out couponmom.com. You’ll find tips on how to reduce your grocery bill by half, free samples, discounts at restaurants, and access to their coupon database that will direct you to coupons that fit your grocery list. Sign up is free!

Save on Cell Phone Plans

  • If you send or receive more than one text a day: Sign up for a texting plan with your service provider for around $5 a month, and you’ll avoid the average 20-cents-per-text charge. If you have a teenager who texts at least six times a day (or you personally rack up the texting mileage) opt for an unlimited-messaging plan.
  • If you signed up for phone insurance: Cut this cost, even if you’re clumsy. That $5 to $8 monthly charge adds up, and you’ll still have to pay a $50 deductible if you need to replace a broken phone. The replacement is often just a refurbished used phone, and often costs about the same as a new one.

Save on Medical Bills

  • Request a three-month prescription. If it’s available, this option can reduce costs up to 33 percent.
  • Try mail-order pharmacies. Those affiliated with your insurance company save you time and gas, and can cost up to a third less than retail pharmacies.

What are some of your best money saving tips?
